Kutná Hora in winter

Winter is the quiet season in Kutná Hora. The churches stay open, the coach crowds thin out, and the light is gone by late afternoon.

From November to March the town runs on winter time. St Barbara's Cathedral closes earlier, the Sedlec ticket office shuts at 3:45 PM, and the sun sets around 4 PM in December. None of this spoils a day trip. It just changes how you plan it.

Below: the weather, the opening hours, how much daylight you get, the train timetable change in December and what the tours do in the cold months. For the route itself, see our Prague to Kutná Hora guide.

The quick answer

Kutná Hora is cold in winter, with average highs of about 4 to 6 °C from December to February. St Barbara's Cathedral opens 10 AM to 5 PM in November and December and 10 AM to 4 PM in January and February, and closes on 24 December. The sun sets at about 4 PM in December. Trains switch to a new timetable on 13 December 2026, and every tour on this site still runs all winter.

What is the weather like in Kutná Hora in winter?

Cold and grey, with highs a few degrees above freezing and nights around 0 °C. Snow comes and goes rather than lying all season.

Kutná Hora sits in the farmland of Central Bohemia, about an hour east of Prague, and shares its winter. The long-term averages for central Prague give a fair picture: a daily high of 4.8 °C in December and 3.9 °C in January, with lows close to freezing. Out in the open country the wind makes it feel colder, and the walk from the ossuary up to St Barbara crosses exposed ground.

Winter is the driest part of the year in terms of rain, but damp. Fog and drizzle are more common than deep snow. When snow does fall, the spires above the vineyards look superb, and the cobbles on Barborská street turn slippery. Shoes with grip matter more than a heavy coat.

What are the opening hours in Kutná Hora in winter?

St Barbara's Cathedral opens 10 AM to 5 PM in November and December and 10 AM to 4 PM in January and February. The Sedlec ticket office opens 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM from November to February.

The cathedral publishes its hours by month. It closes on 24 December, and on Saturday 28 November it opens only from 10 AM to 4 PM because of a Mass. From March it stays open until 5 PM, and from April until 6 PM. Tickets cost 180 CZK in 2026, and you can stay as long as you like.

At Sedlec, the parish shows the opening hours for each day next to the ticket booking, and entry to the ossuary runs on timed slots. Tickets are sold online or at the Sedlec Information Centre on Zámecká street, which keeps short winter hours and closes on 24 December. Plan to be in the lower chapel well before mid-afternoon. More about the slots in our ossuary tickets post.

How short are the days in Kutná Hora in winter?

Very short. Around the solstice the sun rises at about 7:54 AM and sets at about 3:59 PM, a little over eight hours of daylight.

Kutná Hora is further north than most people think, level with southern Belgium. In early December the sun sets before 4 PM, and the town is dark by 4:30 PM. Days stretch quickly after New Year: by mid-February sunset is back to about 5:15 PM, and the clocks go forward on 28 March 2027.

For a day trip this means starting early. A morning train or tour puts you in the ossuary before lunch and in St Barbara while there is still light on the spires. The upside is the evening. You are back in Prague in time for dinner, and the old town looks its best lit up in the frost.

Does the Prague to Kutná Hora train timetable change in December?

Yes. The new national rail timetable starts on 13 December 2026. Until then the fast R9 leaves Praha hlavní nádraží at four minutes past the hour, about every one to two hours, and takes 52 minutes.

Czech Railways changes its timetable once a year, in December, and Prague's PID network confirms the switch for 13 December 2026. The times quoted on most websites, including the last R9 back from Kutná Hora hlavní nádraží at 9:03 PM, run until 12 December. After that, look up your train in the ČD app, Můj vlak, before you leave.

The fare does not depend on the timetable. A PID ticket covering the 10 zones costs 120 CZK in the Lítačka app or 130 CZK on paper. From the main station a short local train runs to Sedlec in about 8 to 10 minutes. The full rundown is in our Kutná Hora train guide.

Do Kutná Hora tours run in winter?

Yes, all year. Most follow the same route as in summer, and the small-group day swaps its folk museum for Český Šternberk Castle in January, February, March and November.

The tour by train runs from Prague's main station, takes 6 hours and costs from $80. The price covers the return train with seat reservations, the local bus between the ossuary and St Barbara, the guide and both entries. Sandemans, the operator, says the train avoids road delays and has toilets on board, which counts for more on a cold day. Lunch is at Restaurace Dačický, where a meal and a drink cost 15 to 20 EUR, and goulash and dumplings suit the weather. One guest wrote that "even though it was raining the day of our trip, Brandon made sure we completed this tour".

The small-group day picks you up at your hotel in a minivan for up to seven, from $155. Its open-air folk museum closes in winter, so from January to March and in November the day includes Český Šternberk Castle instead. It finishes at the ossuary in the late afternoon, which in December means close to dusk. The coach tour is the cheapest guided option with both entries paid, from $65.

What should you wear and bring in winter?

Warm layers, shoes with grip, gloves and a hat. The churches are not heated like a home, and you spend a lot of the day walking between them.

The ossuary's lower chapel is damp, St Barbara is a huge stone nave, and the lanes in between are cobbled and sloped. A thermal layer under a light coat works better than one heavy jacket, because you go in and out all day. Bring gloves you can take off quickly and a small amount of cash in CZK. A coach tour guest suggests snacks and coins for the toilets.

Dress modestly for the churches, which are places of worship. Remember that the ossuary bans photography, so the camera can stay in the bag there. If snow is forecast, keep the free cancellation in mind: every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before. More about December in Christmas in Kutná Hora.
