Sedlec Ossuary tickets

The Bone Church no longer works on a walk-in basis. Entry runs on timed slots with limited capacity, and the rules around them catch out a lot of visitors.

The Sedlec Ossuary is one of the most visited monuments in the Czech Republic, and a small one. The lower chapel, with its bone chandelier and four bone pyramids, holds only so many people at once, so the parish that runs it sells every ticket for a date and a time.

Below: why you should book, what each ticket costs in 2026, how refunds and late arrivals work, the 30-minute rule and the photo ban, the restoration, and the guided and night tours. For the history and what you see inside, read our Sedlec Ossuary guide.

The quick answer

Ossuary tickets cost 220 CZK per adult in 2026 and are sold for a fixed date and time, online or at the Sedlec Information Centre on Zámecká street. The parish says entry cannot be guaranteed without a reservation. Refunds are possible up to 3 days before, as a voucher, and the visit to the lower chapel lasts at most 30 minutes. Photography is banned. A tour with entry included holds the slot for you and cancels free up to 24 hours before.

Do you need to book Sedlec Ossuary tickets in advance?

Yes. The parish calls it "definitely more than recommended": capacity is limited, tickets are for a specific date and time, and entry cannot be guaranteed without a reservation.

The time on the ticket is your entry time to the lower chapel. The parish asks you to arrive about 5 minutes early and no later than 10 minutes after it. Arrive later, and entry cannot be guaranteed, because capacity is strictly limited. The time cannot be changed once you have bought the ticket.

Tickets are sold only in two places, the parish's online shop and the Sedlec Information Centre at Zámecká 279, halfway between the ossuary and the Sedlec Cathedral. You cannot buy them at the church door. Sandemans, which runs the tour by train, says walk-up visitors are regularly turned away once a day's slots sell out, and that its guides book the group's entry days in advance. That is the simplest argument for a tour with entry included.

How much are Sedlec Ossuary tickets in 2026?

220 CZK per adult for the ossuary. The Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady has its own ticket, and the two small Romanesque churches cost 50 CZK and 100 CZK.

The Roman Catholic parish of Kutná Hora - Sedlec runs all four Sedlec sights and sets the prices. Its Sedlec Area ticket covers both chapels of the ossuary and the UNESCO-listed Sedlec Cathedral, during regular opening hours. The cathedral needs no reservation; you can walk in at any time it is open. St Anne's and St James's open seasonally, and both showed as closed when we checked this autumn.

St Barbara's Cathedral in the old town is a separate ticket from a separate office. Most group tours include the ossuary and St Barbara, which together come to 400 CZK per adult at the gate. The private tour lists both as extra, and the budget excursion includes entries only with the matching option.

Can you get a refund on Sedlec Ossuary tickets?

Only up to 3 days before your entry, and only as a voucher credit for another online purchase, valid for 12 months. There is no cash refund.

The parish's rules are short. Cancel no later than 3 days before the date on the ticket, and the money goes back as a voucher. Inside 3 days there is no refund at all. To change your time, you cancel the whole ticket within that window and buy a new one, if another slot is free.

A tour works differently. Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before, with the money back, and the operator deals with the ossuary slot. If your plans in Prague might move, that difference matters more than the ticket price.

How long does a visit to the Sedlec Ossuary take, and can you take photos?

At most 30 minutes in the lower chapel, the ossuary itself. The upper chapel has no time limit. Photography is prohibited throughout.

Thirty minutes is enough to see the chandelier said to use every bone of the human body, the four pyramids, the Schwarzenberg coat of arms and František Rint's signature in bone. The visit is self-guided, and the parish hands out leaflets in the lower chapel. Access is by a temporary wooden staircase, so the ossuary is not wheelchair accessible for now.

The photo ban started in January 2024. Radio Prague reported that it followed tourists taking selfies with the remains, and the parish says the ossuary is "a resting place for thousands of people and a functioning sacred space". Tour operators repeat the rule on their listings. Keep the phone in your pocket, speak quietly and dress as you would for any church.

Skulls and bones line the arches of the lower chapel.

Is the Sedlec Ossuary under restoration?

Yes, since 2014, and the work will run until at least 2030. The ossuary stays open throughout.

The parish found two big problems. The building had tilted nearly half a metre from the vertical, and the lower chapel was extremely humid, damaging the bone decoration, the masonry and the stucco. The parish is the sole investor in the repairs, which is one reason the church stays open: ticket money pays for the work.

The restoration runs in phases so that visitors can still see the decoration, and you may see conservators at work or parts of the chapel behind screens. The parish has also announced a Memento mori exhibition at the ossuary, not yet open. Your ticket goes straight into keeping the place standing.

Are there guided and night tours of the Sedlec Ossuary?

Yes. The parish runs daytime guided tours of up to 60 minutes and Night Tour 77 by candlelight with an organ concert, both booked ahead by e-mail.

The night tour takes place after closing time, usually after dark. A guide in the habit of a Cistercian monk or nun leads you through the ossuary and the cathedral, lit only by hundreds of candles, with about 35 of its 77 minutes in the lower chapel and an organ concert at the end. It is priced for groups: 13,000 CZK for up to 21 people, or 600 CZK per person for 22 to 50. Book at least 2 weeks ahead, and cover arms, knees and back.

For most visitors from Prague the daytime visit with a tour is the practical choice. The coach tour includes the ossuary and St Barbara for $65, the hotel pickup tour adds the Sedlec Cathedral for $86, and the small-group day visits the ossuary in the late afternoon, when most groups have gone.
