Kutná Hora by Train with the Bone Chapel

About this experience

This is the trip most people book, with 4.6 stars from 2,597 reviews. The price covers a guided tour, return train tickets with a seat reservation, the bus ticket between the Bone Chapel and St Barbara, and entry to both the Sedlec Ossuary and St Barbara's Church. The Sedlec parish sells ossuary entry in timed slots, 220 CZK per adult in 2026, and says plainly that entry cannot be guaranteed without a reservation. A visit to the lower chapel, the ossuary itself, lasts at most 30 minutes. Sandemans says walk-up visitors are regularly turned away once a day's slots sell out, and its guide books the group's entry days ahead. The tour cancels free up to 24 hours before. Official ossuary tickets refund only up to 3 days before, and only as a voucher.

The train is the operator's own choice. It avoids road works on the motorway, there are toilets on board, and Sandemans calls it carbon neutral. The first stop is the ossuary in Sedlec. The lower chapel holds the bones of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, arranged by the woodcarver František Rint in 1870 into four pyramids, garlands, the Schwarzenberg coat of arms and a chandelier said to use every bone in the human body. A short local bus ride then takes you to St Barbara's. St Barbara's was begun in 1388 and only finished in 1905, after the Hussite Wars and the decline of the silver mines stopped work for decades at a time. Its three tent-shaped spires and the medieval frescoes of miners inside are the reason many visitors call it the better half of the day.

Along the way the guide points out the Sankturin House, the Italian Court where the Prague groschen was minted, medieval Ruthardka Street, the Stone House and the Plague Column. Lunch is a relaxed hour at Restaurace Dačický, a timber-beamed Czech tavern where the listing puts a meal and a beer or wine at 15 to 20 EUR, at your own expense. You can also bring a packed lunch. The afternoon continues at Hrádek. Groups run up to 30, and guests name Oliver, Brandon, Pavel and Jan as guides.

Tips before you book

  • Wear shoes with grip. The listing warns of uneven, cobbled and sloped streets.
  • Leave the camera in your bag in the ossuary. Photography inside the ossuary has been banned since January 2024. The parish calls it a resting place for thousands of people and a functioning sacred space.
  • Carry some euros or Czech crowns for lunch. The listing quotes 15 to 20 EUR for a meal and a drink at Dačický.
  • Want to know how the train works on your own? Our Kutná Hora train guide covers the R9, tickets and the local train into town.
